Parenting is powerful - it is not just about parents; it is shared by grandparents, relatives, friends and those who care for children. To shape and influence a child's life is one of the most important things one can do.

Parenting SA is an initiative of the Government of South Australia established in 1996 to promote the value of parents and the important role of parenting. It is funded through the Community Development Fund from gambling revenue raised in South Australia.

It acknowledges and respects the diversity of family and cultural patterns with recognition that there is no one right way of parenting.

The site has a link to PEGs, Parent Easy Guides (or PEGs as they are affectionately known) bring simple, easy-to-read information on many of the issues faced by parents from birth through adolescence. They have PDF versions that can be downloaded.

The PEGs are considered the "flagship" for Parenting SA and represent a valuable information source not only for parents and those caring for children, but also professionals.

They have been developed from research in conjunction with appropriate experts and are widely used throughout Australia.

How To Drug Proof Your Kids (Click to go to their site) How To Drug Proof Your Kids (DPYK) (www.families.org.au/dpyk/)

How to Drug Proof Your Kids (DPYK) is an education, prevention and intervention parenting program developed by Focus on the Family Australia motivated by the increasing drug problem among young people and the frustrated attempts by parents to steer their children away from the harmful use of drugs.

DPYK is the acronym for How to DRUG PROOF YOUR KIDS. Daily we read more reports of the 'public health time bomb' that is being created through the eating, drinking, drug taking and smoking habits of this generation of teenagers.

The How to DRUG PROOF YOUR KIDS program was developed by Focus on the Family Australia in response to the needs of parents and has now been adapted for use in New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, South Africa and the USA.

This six 2-hour programme is based on sound research that clearly indicates the importance of a healthy family environment, where high levels of parent connectedness can substantially reduce the risk of harmful drug abuse by their children.

Better informed parents communicate more effectively, and a knowledge of available resources puts parents in a position to significantly reduce the risks.

Easy availability, peer pressure and the perceived 'excitement' of drugs is a major concern for today's parents.

There is a wide spectrum of drug use, ranging from abstinence to dependence, and parents need to understand and respond in a way most appropriate to their situation. To simply tell children who are already casual or dependent users to stop using drugs is naïve. As is lecturing young people that "all they have to do is say no".

No Apologies (Click to go to their site) No Apologies (www.families.org.au/noapologies/)

No Apologies is a character-based abstinence-until-marriage program that brings a fresh message of hope to a generation who are seeing an increasing rate of teen pregnancy, abortion, single parent households and divorce.

The character-based curriculum specifically promotes abstinence and helps adolescents identify the harmful effects associated with premarital sexual activity.

No Apologies was created to help young people safely navigate the most critical decade of their lives—those years between the ages of 12 and 22. It is during these years that adolescents are confronted with choices that can sabotage their future. Young people need information and skills to guide them in their decision-making to avoid the consequences of high-risk behaviour.

This relationship-centred curriculum is designed to educate and empower teenagers to make wise decisions and to develop positive character traits in the sexual domain. These traits include respect, responsibility, integrity, courage, self-control and honesty.

The No Apologies program includes effective, age-appropriate and culturally relevant activities tested in classrooms, youth groups and health departments all over the world.

After attending the 12-hour course*, young people are asked questions like, “How do you want to manage your sex life today and in the decades to come?”. Young people are invited to make a decision to protect themselves and their future by choosing to abstain from all sexual activity outside of marriage. Each young person is offered a pledge card to sign and date as a reminder of the wise decision made.

For Those Working with Men

Men Engaging Neways logo Men Engaging Neways (users.senet.com.au/~ggibson/)

Being a man now days is not an easy thing to do. As men, whether we like it or not we are often challenged to engage in new ways in our lives. Men are being asked to engage in new ways of living, new ways of carrying out family and community roles and often we are not sure what is expected of us as father, sons, partners or even as friends. For many men this may be the first time in our lives that we have been directly challenged in this way and not all men have been able to respond to this challenge in a positive way or cope with these expectations very well.

The Men Engaging Neways facilitator's resource kit is a program of 21 sessions that creates the opportunity for men to come together and discuss various men's and boys health and well being issues that are effecting their lives today. Topics covered range from broader issues such as Definitions of Manhood and Riding the Storm to personal development type issues such as Emotions, Responsibilities, Expectations, Communication Filters and Intimacy.

The Men Engaging Neways facilitator's resource kit has been designed and developed for both the professional and non-professional community worker or potential men's support group leader. The program has been designed to be used by community volunteers, social workers, health professionals, teachers, adult educators, church workers and others. People from the wider community are also highly encouraged to utilise this resource kit regardless of age, cultural background formal and informal skills training, as everyone has the potential to contribute invaluable life experiences towards this 'grass roots' based activity resource.

This is a community development focused program that presents a practical hands on opportunity for men and boys to explore the issues evolving around masculinity and I trust that you find the program challenging, rewarding and fulfilling.

The Engaging Fathers Project Logo

The Engaging Fathers Project (www.newcastle.edu.au/centre/fac/efathers/efinfo.html)

The Engaging Fathers Project aims to promote the well being of children from 0 to 8 years of age by engaging fathers and father figures in the lives of the children. The project has a focus on schools, family services, antenatal, childcare and early education institutions. It supports these institutions to better recruit and engage fathers and father figures with their children.

Context and Origin of the Project
This proposal grows from the work of the Boys in Schools Program of the Family Action Centre of the University of Newcastle. The Boys in Schools Program is a leading provider of training, research and resources in the areas of boys' education, male health and men's involvement with families. An important principle has emerged from this work: the need for communities to identify what they value and respect in men and boys.

"Fathering" is taken to include males caring, fostering, nurturing and teaching of babies and children and is not restricted to biologically-based parenting. In recent years, attention has been given to the relationships between fathers and sons. The project extends this work to fathers' relationships with their daughters.

Through the institutions
This project aims to address fathers through the major institutional sites impacting on their relationships with children. The project seeks to strengthen the partnerships between the institutions and the men in the community, with a focus on the welfare of the children involved.
